I've seen them at bed bath and beyond. The instructions are in the kit. I'm not sure you can make the mechanism needed to retract or at least as cheaply as mass produced ones.
You don't need an extra track or anything special on your existing sliding door. The retractable screens come with all that is needed and are easy to install!

I agree with Kelli. Cheaper to buy than to try to make one. The components wold cost much more...if you could get them.
That will be difficult if you don't have the extra tract for a screen door. When it comes time to replace, order the triple tract for screen.
