You can sand it off. Is it just a little like a spill or the entire deck? If a spill you can also strip it. What's the end game? Going to repaint it?

Hi! I would power wash it first. Is it latex? It's easier to remove than oil based. If you aren't sure, dab a cotton ball saturated with alcohol. It will remove a water base paint. Water based sits more on the surface. Anyway, once you power wash, let it dry completely before sanding.

    Hi Sharon,

You can use a paint remover or sand it off. A lot of people like Critistrip paint remover because it's less toxic, but for a deck you'll need a lot. Be sure to follow all of the directions and it might take more than one application. If you use a sander, start with a lower grit then smooth with a higher grit or scrape it off and use a power washer as suggested in this article. Hope this helps. Wishing you the best.
