How can I break granite into smaller pieces for use in a project?

I have lots of small stone size pieces of granite that I'd like to break up. Have tried a hammer but that didn't work. Some of the colorations are very pretty and I'd like to do something with them but need smaller pieces. TIA.

granite will break into chunks that are not going to be useful. I would lay what you have in the nice design outside and maybe create a pathway ..or table on the top of plywood
Granite is actually quite fragile... I’m wondering what form your granite is in. Does it have a pattern? Color variations that form veins? If so, use a chisel (carefully, please, and wearing safety glasses) and strike the granite at a vein by placing your chisel there and hitting it with your hammer. Please use caution when using chisels as they are sharp and can slip. Make sure it can be used on stone and not just wood... that it’s a masonry chisel. You’ve got to have a focused area of impact in order for most stones to break, otherwise you’re just pulverizing them...

Thanks all for the suggestions but they are chunks about an inch thick and varied shapes - not huge pieces of granite. Think the size of marble stones. Thanks anyway,.
