How can I channel the rain water in my yard for gardening purposes?

Figure out the way the water runs, toward the back, the front, etc. then dig a trench from the start of the runoff water to where you want it to end up, either in the street drainage or a ditch. It will have to be lower as you dig the trench toward where the water will dump out. The excess dirt can be used as a mound to direct the water, particularly if you are just wanting to block the water from coming onto your yard. The problem with that is it will pond up instead of running off as it would with a trench. If you are going to put in a french drain, you can look that up on the internet for the specific install directions and supplies needed.

If I were you Cindylee, I might consider putting in a french drain to redirect the water. We put in a french drain one summer and used all the run off to dump it with just the end out of the ground to flow into our apple orchard. We had 4 apple trees, a peach tree and a plum tree there. They were in the lowest part of our lot and all the water off our yard and several yards above us came to the trees. We live in a dry area, so it was a blessing to have it go that way. Perhaps you could do the something the same if you need water for bushes, flowers, fruit trees, or even berries.

My Father in law was a Gardner! He lived growing things, so what did was get a 50 gal drum, and then he redirected his drain spout into it, and every time it rained, it would drain in the drum!
