Which paints and method of painting do you recommend for cabinets?

Gail....If you use chalk paint there is no sanding...just need to clean well with most any product you have. I usually cut in any raised sections on cabinet doors with paint brush then paint with small roller...works well for me. Good luck! I also suggest if you remove the doors (best for me) that you mark each so you can return each to proper spot.

First wipe the cabinets down with something to remove any grease and grime that has accumulated. I prefer denatured alcohol for this but you can also whip up some soapy water using Dawn dish soap. There are other products available for this job from Amazon, home improvement centers, and other sources. You don’t need to completely sand down the cabinets but rough up the finish with a rough grit sandpaper such as a 60-grit. Even though it can be harder to clean up after enamel paint than latex, it will hold up better in the long run. You can use a brush and get good results because most paints have a self leveling agent that eliminates brush marks. There are also small rollers that are made of foam that are especially for smooth surfaces such as cabinets. They do sometimes leave a slightly textured surface, so test out on a small area first. I would definitely steer you away from spraying unless you are removing the cabinets first so you can do them outside. Spraying indoors, even using an HVLP sprayer will produce a lot of overspray on everything in the vicinity. I know this from experience. Best of luck with your project.

Hey Gail! I am working on a post right now about painting kitchen cabinets! I painted them over a year ago, but wanted to make sure they held up before I went on giving advice to people about it! Lol! Anyway, since I haven't finished the post, I will give you a run down here on the way I did it and what products I used!

So I started by stripping my cabinets, which were previously stained, using citristrip. It works really well and is easy to find at your local Walmart or home improvement store. Then I wiped them down with mineral spirits to get any lasting stripper off. I primed them first with Zinnser Bullseye primer and then I used Sherwin Williams Pro Classic Waterbased Acrylic Alkyd paint. It is the ONLY paint I have ever used that does NOT leave brush strokes! I LOVE this stuff, it is expensive though so I wait for their 40 percent off sale that they have usually ever 2 months! I also used a HomeRight TPS sprayer (costs 99 bucks and worth EVERY penny) to spray both the primer and paint!! I use it on ALL my painting projects now! One tip is to MAKE SURE and water the primer and paint down correctly! I recently saw someone post that they could not recommend this sprayer because of the speckling it did with the paint, it ONLY does that when you do not thin the paint correctly!

I of course took all the doors off and drawers out to paint them, I taped everything off so that I was able to spray the cabinet frames as well! It takes a little while to tape and cover everything but it is so worth the little extra time, bc of the time it saves when spraying vs hand painting! After letting them dry, I placed the new hinges on and hardware and they were good to go! I have the kitchen reveal if you would like to see the cabinets that I painted!
