I need a 12ft storage shelf for the middle of my garage that is freestanding (not attached anywhere) and can hold several totes. I'd like 3 tiers perhaps and it should be about 3-4 feet deep. Can you help?

Menards sells some great metal garage freestanding shelves that hold quite a bit of weight. They are reasonable in price especially when on sale, and easy to put together. They are very sturdy. They come in different sizes and will easily hold plastic totes. I would check prices on buying these vs making your own.

I have used this basic design for several free standing shelving units in my basement and have been very happy with them. Rock solid. You can adapt the design for the lengths you want. Adjust the height of the shelf supports for the size totes you will use. I used 3/4 plywood instead of OSB.
