How can I refinish end table tops?

You could paint them with a chalk based paint. I love using Fusion Mineral Paint, there is no prep and the colors are beautiful!

You have some sort of veneer over pressed wood. You can't really refinish these tables in the traditional way than you would if the tables were all wood. Painting them is probably your best option. Chalk paint or Mineral paint would be good options.

If these were my tables, I would add a trim around the table to cover the damage, or at each corner - to match. Then either stain or paint the trim or paint the whole table top. You can buy metallic paint for a contrast maybe?

Well, Mom, what you do depends on the end result you're looking for. Since the material underneath is actually manufactured wood, I'd first sand down the textured surface and patch the nicks and dings. Then use a paint with primer built in for an easy one-two finish. (spray or brush, your choice) The color you choose can really make that metal swirl pop. If you're up for it, go for a two-toned effect like the original. Have fun and enjoy your finished cutie!

Have you tried peeling the veneer or "coating" off the particle board? If the particle board is still in good shape, then you can lightly sand it and paint. I would use a good primer first. I actually suggest using a good primer and not a primer paint mixture as particle board will swell and decompose if moisture gets to it. A moisture barrier primer will help with that problem.

OR... You could patch the chip with wood putty and sand to level with veneer. Again... prime good (moisture barrier) and paint.
