I hang mine by color.
I use the organizer bins from ikea for the items I fold. Then I organize my hanging clothes by color as well!

I use plastic crates on the top shelf to store out-of-season clothes. You can also use the under-the-bed plastic storage boxes for out-of-season clothes.
I also add a second rod to hang tops on top, and pants on bottom. You can add a shelf over that second rod to store shoes. Then I hang things by color.
I also like the large fabric hangers over the rod, to store purses and sweaters. And I have some narrower ones to store shoes by season.
