Hi Cynthia, sorry you are dealing with ants in your plants. Hope this is helpful.

There are several ways to eradicate ants from your potted plants. You may eradicate the pests with insecticides or baits, drown them in a solution of water and insecticidal soap, or deter them with common household items. If you can't get rid of pests, repot your plant in fresh soil and a sanitized pot.

A simple remedy worth trying is one I read somewhere. Sprinkle Jiffy corn muffin mix into your garden area. Supposedly the ants carry bits of the mixture back to the queen and when ingested by all of them, kills them. Plain corn meal may work but think they are attracted to the sweetness of the premixed Jiffy mix. I tried it last year when I had the little tiny fire ants all over my patio. It worked! Just scatter it around and wait a few days and I think you'll be surprised.

Unless they are biting red ants, or damaging your plants (doubful as they fertilise and aerate the soil) or invading your home why do you want to kill them? They are fellow creatures of this planet, provide food for other insects and birds and are entitled to a life and I really wish people would stop calling them pests, we are the pests that destroy everything in our wake.

Many of my pots have ant nests, they kill bugs that destroy plant roots and bulbs, I leave them be...my garden is organic and self managing and balanced because I work with nature not against it.
