Back door entrance should still be welcoming. I agree with Lisa S. Since it’s a back door, have fun painting it a fun favorite color or two! (Hot Pink? Bright Purple?...) maybe a fun Stencil. Is it covered? Does it need an awning of some kind? And yes a new door mat, potted plants also. Or trim and neaten up what you do have.

Add a wreath. Hang a sign. Do you have enough room for a plant on a stand? Welcome mat.
