Hi Debra. I recommend that you set traps around the perimeter of your home.

I have been able to get rid of them at our farmhouse, even when we bushhog, by using a combination of peppermint & cinnamon oil. I purchased a spray off Amazon but have seen it at Ace Hardware. It can be sprayed or saturate cotton balls. Place around and make sure to re-apply as the scent fades. They don’t like the smell. I’ve been told it can be toxic to pets.

When I had rats in my house I all professionals who specialized in getting rid of rodents in the house and attic. All trees that are hanging near your roof needs to be cut back so they cant get in your attic. They sealed the attic so rodents could not get in and also any area around the house like holes from your house where pipes run through to your house like under your kitchen sinks. They even put a screen around my air vent to my clothes dryer because they found some rats in there. They did set traps in the attic. I was told to move all bird feeders away from my house at least 20 feet. They would come in every week and remove the rat traps in the attic of any rats. But it was probably about 3 weeks and I had no rats anymore. It was very expensive so hopefully this can help you from spending so much money.
