XL Industrial Look Wood and Metal Ottoman Coffee Table Tray

I purchased a large ottoman second hand and wanted to use it as a coffee table. In researching trays, I discovered it was going to cost a pretty penny to purchase one large enough to work on this 40" ottoman. After much online research, I finally found an item that might work to serve as the base for my tray. Home Depot had a hot water heater drip pan that I thought might work. Off to Home Depot...

First I purchased a 24" aluminum water heater tray and some textured spray paint and a length of rustic rope. My initial thought was this would do the trick. After painting and adorning with rope, I felt like it wasn't really done. Back to Home Depot again and I found an awesome, perfectly sized round of unfinished pine wood and a couple of nice cabinet door handles.

I sanded the disk well and then added a couple of coats of stain. I considered myself lucky that I had stain and clear coat left over from a prior project. After the stain was dry, I added several coats of polyurethane and sanded lightly with fine steel wool after each coat. The last coat does not get sanded.

Lastly I drilled holes for the 2 cabinet door handles and screwed them on.

I love this industrial rustic tray that I created.

Shopping list for this project is as follows:

24" aluminum hot water heater drain pan

23.75" wood pine round

Very fine steel wool

stain of your choice

clear coat of your choice

approx 1.5' of rope to fill drain hole and add a decorative touch

2 cabinet door handles

1 can of textured spray paint

(4) 1.25" #32 flat head screws. I found that the hardware that came with the handles were both too long and too short for this round board. 1.25" works perfectly, so grab 4 of those while you are picking up the rest of the materials needed.
