You can use a gel stain or polyshades to change the color of your stain. You can go darker but not lighter. If you use a gel stain you will need at least 2 coats, maybe 3. It look streaky and awful with the first coat so don't be intimidated! You will have to sand lightly and clean but you won't have to strip any old finish off.
