Do you have a photo? I've recently done two different gas fireplace makeovers. If you have ugly tile, you can paint (and stencil it). I also recently refinished the metal grate on a gas fireplace. It was surprisingly simple- just took some very careful frog tape work, and black high-heat spray paint.
