Can I use a flat paint over a semi-gloss paint?

I have white kitchen cabinets that have been painted with white semi gloss paint. I want to paint my cabinets with a light grey paint but I want to use some kind of flat paint instead of semi gloss. But I'am not sure if I can do that? Can you give me your opinion on this? I'm disparate for some help.

Karen: if you did not use oil paint, you're good to go. (However, flat paint in a kitchen will be hard to clean.)

Hi Karen. The sheen of the paint is what determines whether it is glossy or dull (flat). It is best to use a paint that forms a hard surface. There are alkyd paints that come in different sheens and can be used. Good luck!

I would start by sanding lightly with a 120 grit sandpaper to remove any gloss. You don't have to get down to the wood of your cabinets, you just take off the glossy finish. Clean well and then prime with a primer. I have used an acrylic latex paint in an enamel finish to paint my kitchen cabinets a light gray. I really don't see any shine to it. It is more of a matte finish. I purchased my cabinet paint at Sherwin Williams.

You can sand the semi-gloss areas a bit first, then paint. Or you can paint with a primer first, then the flat paint. In my opinion, I would not use flat paint on kitchen cabinets. It will be too hard to clean and you will probably rub off the paint trying to clean it.

I would sand and use primer first. Otherwise in my own experience it doesn't give you a great flat look. Good luck,
