What I have used is large plastic plant saucer. They are usually about an inch of so deep. Then I have taken a tomato plant stake and dig the ends into the ground and put the saucer on top of it and filled it up. If you have small birds where the water could be too deep just put washed stones (no soap just vinegar and a scrub) so they can perch on those and drink. I actually had used an old ashtray stand but then saw a idea here and used the tomato plant stake. here is the link: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/garden/simple-tomato-cage-bird-bath-43338607?expand_all_questions=1

Good idea from Kate, you might be able to use a frisbee as the basin for the water, easy to clean and replace as needed.

Kate has a great suggestion. The main thing is that you have any kind of container which will hold water and some ledges for support so the birds can perch and sip water. If the water is shallow enough they can hop in and flutter.

The support can be as simple as a large pot.

I started with a very simple one and changed it over time. The animals don’t care what it looks like. Once they find it they will come back

i don’t understand that solar is not efficient. I have a solar fountain but it’s I weak in cloudy weather and strong in the sunshine. The only one that works all the time is a low voltage fountain powered from your house.

Whatever you put in the birds and animals will enjoy it.
