How can I add a mantle to this fireplace and replace the screen?

Im looking to attach a mantel over my brick fireplace. Brick Is from floor to ceiling. Not sure what is the easiest way to start. What materials are best? Will it be expensive? Will it be safe?The actual fireplace is approximately 2 feet off the ground. I'm worried the brick will not hold the weight of a mantel. The house was built in 1956. I also want to replace the ugly gold screen too. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! ☺
