I have an unruly bush. Some of the stems are quite long. Do I trim now or after they bloom ?

You should trim right after blooming. They bloom on old growth. So if you trim in late winter or early spring they won’t bloom as well as the buds are trimmed off.

Thanks, I guess that trimming job will wait.

If you like the long flower-covered stems, take off the entire stem. If you don't, you will have short "explosions" of branches at the cut point which looks very messy.

For starting more plants and/or "forcing" flowers in your house, cut branches as soon as the buds are formed in early spring.

As a general rule, trimming or pruning is performed after blooms fade.

Hello -general rules suggest to prone after flowering in most cases and never take more than 1/3 of the plant.

My neighbor just proved thiers recently it was growing into the roadside. You might suffer some lack of blossoms doing it now but if it’s a healthy large existing plant probably could tolorate some mild pruning now.
