Take a photo of the table to the paint department of your home improvement store and ask them for ideas. They have the best paints, stains and application tools to do a great job and may have ideas you've never thought of.

If the table top has a finish on it. . . like varnish or polyurethane that finish must be removed before you can restain the table top.
