I have to give my step-mom, Michelle, a shout out for this one! She introduced me to duvet covers at the young age of 15 and I haven’t bought a traditional comforter since! Duvet covers just make life, and laundry, so much easier! No need to wash bulky comforters weekly with these guys. And if your like me and HATE top sheets this is a way to make use of those bad boys that stack up in your closet!

So for this project you will need:

  • Two top sheets - the same size
  • straight pins
  • sewing machine (however, you could hand stitch if you like)
  • snap pliers
  • plastic snap buttons
  • ribbon (color doesn’t matter)

Gather your top sheets, if they are from two different sets of sheets, no worries, as long as they are the same size you are good to go! Having 2 different sheets would give you 2 different sides to use, and would make changing the look of your bedroom as easy as flipping over your duvet! I dyed this pair of white top sheets for my last tutorial! It was such a fun afternoon project! Check out my “Ice dye Sheets” tutorial for detailed instructions on how I achieved this look!

I started by laying my sheets out with the wrong side facing out and pinned them together along 3 edges, both sides and the bottom of the sheets. You’ll want to leave one end open so you can put your snaps on that end!

I didn’t take a photo of the sewing process, I am no expert seamstress, but as long as your lines are fairly straight you’ll be in good shape! I almost forgot to add the ties to the corners, to do this I cut a 12” piece of ribbon, folded it in half and laid it in the corner where the two seams meet from the sides and sewed a diagonal stitch across to hold it in place, this ribbon will help secure the comforter in place!

I use the ribbon to tie the corner of the comforter to the corner of the duvet so it doesn’t end up all wadded up inside! If you buy a duvet insert typically they will have a loop for you to tie it into place, but we already had a comforter so I just tied the corner of that and it works like a charm!

This little guy! What a neat tool! You’ll want to follow the directions that it comes with, and make sure the snaps you buy fit he snap plier! This particular one works with common 3 sizes!

These are the snaps I chose to use! I was a little nervous about the plastic breaking or not being strong but these things are small and mighty! They have a very good snap to them.

I placed my snaps 5” apart across the bottom, use the pick they provide with the plier to poke a hole in the fabric, be careful not to poke yourself, this thing is super sharp!

Once the hole is in the fabric take the side of the snap with the prong and place through the hole, add on the opposing side and clamp with your pliers! Repeat on the opposite side using the other side of the snap, making sure your measurements are the same!

Once all your snaps are in place, put your comforter or duvet insert inside, tie the ribbons around the 4 corners and snap your snaps and you, my crafty friend, are done!

It turned out so cute and was so easy! I literally want to make duvets with all my spare top sheets now! Hope you all enjoyed this tutorial! Be sure to follow me on Instagram for sneak peaks of what’s to come, @redsrusticworkshop
