Why would black chunks be coming out of my bathroom water?

I live in an apartment complex on the 3rd floor. I was washing clothes out in bathtub (didn't have time to go to laundromat) and had a white shirt and socks in the bathroom sink both faucets running hot water. Quickly my sink and tub filled up with black chunky specks. My shower faucet has been messed up since we moved in (they still have Not fixed it) where u either get one extreme or the other on temp and it by is hard to get the water to turn on and/or stay on in the bath tub. My question is what could the accumulation of black chunky specks be? And could the two issues be tied into one another?

Since it's a complex, I'm thinking you don't have cast iron plumbing. The water heater may have corroded and is causing the gunk. Your landlord needs to get on the ball and fix these plumbing issues.

Sounds like a bad water heater and possibly galvanized piping. Contact your landlord.

Siince it is the hot water, it is more than likely the hot water heater rather than the pipes being corroded. If it were the pipes, then it would be both the hot and cold water. Sounds like a job for the landlord.

It's also possible that some of the O rings have crumbled. It's likely that both faucets are the same age so both O rings could have failed at the same time
