A Unique Thanksgiving

Revisiting a Thanksgiving tablesetting, celebrating a rare pairing that will never happen again in our lifetimes...
As we start to veer towards the autumn season and thoughts turn towards Fall decorating, I've started to recall how last year's tablesetting pretty much designed itself, given the uniqueness of the alignment of holidays. While Christmas is celebrated on the same date every year and Thanksgiving follows a typical pattern, Hanukkah instead is determined by a lunar calendar and moves around the month of December quite liberally. Still, I never remember it actually landing on Thanksgiving and in fact, this is an event so rare, it won't happen again for hundreds of years. So, of course, my table needed to pay homage to both coinciding holidays.
The color feeling I went with centered on the browns and golds of autumn, laced with the delicate blues that typify Hanukkah. The hydrangea florals fit right into the visual story.
The centerpiece revolved around a variety of gourds I painted with iridescent paint, happily strewn with dreidels and Hanukkah gelt.
The place settings were built around blue and gold plates decorated with autumn fruits from Pier 1.
Layered napkins paired blue ruffled linen from Pottery Barn with bronze shimmer from Pier 1, all wrapped in jeweled rings. Golden goblets from Pier 1 served wine, while tortoise shell glasses held water.
Despite the autumn palette, the table glows and shimmers, aided by glitter dusted candles and gilded touches.
The variety of fruits can be seen in the long view.
Candlesticks in blue mercury glass from Pottery Barn add another nod to Hanukkah.
The centerpiece seen from above underscores the unusual holiday mix.
Glittered acorns add a festive touch to the autumn tableau.
The colors blend to give a homey glow.
The full view hints at the feast that’s to follow. Potato latkes were served alongside turkey and trimmings. Can you think of another odd holiday pairing that rarely occurs together?

I will no doubt have to work a little harder this year to come up with an unusual hook to my Thanksgiving table. But painting gourds can turn any color story into a Thanksgiving theme and is definitely a good place to start...
