Best way to clean a red brick fireplace

I am not sure if I want to paint my fireplace yet, but would like to clean it to see if it helps lighten the brick. Any suggestions on cleaning fireplace and what to use?
Thanks in advance for your help.

They make a sealer for brick that will make it look so much better , I used winded and cleaned my brick and then sprayed the sealer on . It made my brick on my fire place look like it was brand new . I got the sealer at home depo , don't remember the name . I just poured it in a spray bottle and put two coats on . I do it again when I notice that it is looking dull.

I saw on an HGTV program where they used scrubbin' bubbles and a stiff brush. They put down lots of clothes to catch the runoff! I think you might have to spray lightly with water and wipe it down afterwards. I have been tempted to do that to mine, but just don't have the energy to get to it!

Our chimney sweep told us ammonia in a spray bottle. It worked like magic, was cheap and easy. Be sure to open windows and use gloves.

WHEN I WAS LITTLE MY DAD SEALED THE BRICKS ON THE FIRE PLACE TO KEEP THEM IN SHAPE (IT WAS A GAS ONE SO NOT USED). THEN HE GOT BRICK TILES AND CUT THEM UP SO HE CAN PUT THEM ON TO LOOK LIKE THE REAL ONE (SO NOT ALL ALIGNED AND EVEN). THEM HE SEALED THEM AND THEY LOOKED GREAT THE 30 YEARS WE LIVED THERE. HE ADD A BOARD THAT SLIDE OUT FOR A SAFE KEEP PLACE AND MY MY DECORATED IT UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH VILLAGES AND TRAINS.

I used soap and water with a stiff brush. Let it dry over night. Then to brighten the bricks, I white washed them with deluted whitepaint. Love the outcome.
