How can I freshen up painted front steps?

My dear friend needs suggestions on how to refresh the look of her two front steps and adjoining small front door stoop. They've been painted in the past, but paint is old and worn, chipped off. She’s wondering if she should repaint the steps or tile them, or??? She lives in Portland OR. Stoop is barely covered by roof extension over it, but steps are exposed to elements. Suggestions with photos, directions, supply list, how to protect/preserve, etc. much appreciated. She’s on a budget. House was built in 40’s.Thanks.

Repaint the steps. Clean off any loose paint and use a good floor and porch paint. If she was to tile them she would need to use exterior tile. Thicker than interior tile. Also has texture for non slip.

My daughter did her front steps and veranda with high-quality exterior, non-slip porcelain tiles wih a 50 year life, nosings on the edges. Pricey - but looks terrific, easy to clean - and will not have to be done again in her lifetime. Also adds curb appeal and increases home value.
Begin by cleaning with a pressure washer. That will remove a lot of the paint. You can also scrub with a stiff brush or wire brush. If you plan to paint the porch again, be sure to use paint made for this exact purpose. Perhaps a phone call to Sherwin Williams may help with knowing the paint and sealer to use. Good luck Susan.

Do you have a photo? I've seen a lot of really porches & steps stenciled with a Moroccan tile pattern. And it could work fine with a weathered look.
