Should I use poly or wax over an oil-based stain on a table?

I have used both on numerous furniture and kitchen projects. I rarely use wax and then only on the pieces that don't get a lot of use/wear---like a decorative foyer chest, a wall shelf, etc. I use Polycrylic on any piece that needs more protection and has to hold up to daily use---like a dining table, kitchen cabinet, end table, etc. Regardless of the brand you use, wax is a low durability finish and will have to be reapplied. Poly will last much longer. I usually apply 3 coats and very lightly sand between coats. Some people prefer the "softened look" that you can get with waxing. I like that look too, so sometimes I wax over a piece that I poly. Just allow the poly to cure for about 4 weeks before waxing. Good luck!

I'd definitely recommend poly. It's much more durable than wax for a table top!
