Hi Terri, you could add long shelves across the entire back of the closets. The back wall would have to be able to hold all the weight. Sturdy shelves could hold a lot of cans, food boxes and the like.

Leave a little room on either end and you could have a space for brooms, mops and vacuum etc.

I have a large walk in closet off of my dining room. It has become a multi purpose closet! I use the wire garage style shelving units for a pantry area where I store all my "extra" canned goods that don't fit in my too small kitchen pantry. It's also a place where I store my extra crockpots, deep fat fryer, waffle iron, etc. There is even room on the top for my husbands collection of flashlights, hats, and misc. junk! The wire shelving units come in different widths and heights. I looked specifically for one that would hold a lot of weight on each shelf. I had thought of building shelves but this was much easier and faster. It also gave me the option of changing things around. Had I put permanent shelves up that wouldn't have been an option, I still have room for coats and boots and a file cabinet in the closet. Occasionally I take EVERYTHING out to clean! It is AMAZING how much "stuff" I can fit in that closet!

If you don't want (or can't) install shelving, you could always put stand-alone shelving in the closet instead. They come in all sizes so that you can make the most of the space you have available. https://amzn.to/2LHDLOs
