Hi Brenda! I would recommend a gel stain! General Finishes java gel stain is great. And you do not have to sand or prime beforehand! :)

You need to sand the existing finish off the wood, apply stain, and seal with a poly or wood finish.
Sand the existing finish, clean the sanding dust, and apply stain with a lint free cloth or staining pad.
