How do I make a small sump pit for dirt crawl space?

The only opening for 1880 house is 23 “ wide by 13 “ high. Opening can not be enlarged. I want to install a sump pit and can not find one that will fit thru the opening. Any one ever make one from a Home Depot pail or cut a plastic pit down and put it back together under the house. Any suggestions for installing a sump pit and pump in a dirt crawl are welcome.

thanks

    Hi Ede,

Crawl spaces are different sizes depending on the house. Rather than send you a link for a specific video, I decided to send you a link that has several links on youtube.com . That way you'll be able to preview them and choose the one that is closest to your space. I hope this helps you. Wishing you the best.

Dig out more dirt until it fits. I’ve had to do this now on two different homes. Rain water collects in the lowest area. It’s a muddy mess and use a hand claw and trowel and small buckets to remove excess soil. Go even deeper down, add heavy plastic to channel the water, and add some pea gravel to help keep soil from clogging pump. Hire a skinny neighbor kid to help. It’s a miserable job so pay him well.

The sump pump should fit through your opening. The pipes and float switches probably need to be disconnected and then reconnected after installation.
