Every year, my knitting group has a Christmas ornament exchange. This year, we drew names to make a special ornament for a particular person in the group. I drew the name of someone who quilts in addition to knitting. So I decided to use an empty thread spool to make a cute mouse stuck in a spool ornament for my sewing friend!

To make this ornament, you'll need two colors of felt fabric and a simple spool. Your spool can be wood or plastic, and almost any size (but not too heavy). My spool is 1 3/4 inches high, and I wouldn't go much smaller than that. Your spool can be empty or still have thread on it that you want to use.

One of your felt colors should be brown, gray, or white for your mouse body. The other color is pink for the inside of your mouse ears (but this is optional).

The other supplies are pretty basic. You can find them on my blog post.

The first step is to cut out a piece of felt to make your mouse head. I made a paper template (more directions on my blog). Then I traced my paper template on to a piece of felt.

Form a cone from your felt piece and sew it up the side. Then turn your cone inside out.

Sew a bead on the end of your cone for your mouse nose.

Stuff your mouse head with fiber fill, making sure to work the stuffing all the way in to your mouse nose. Leave some unfilled space at the open end of your cone.

Using a needle and thread, make a running stitch around the edge of your cone. Then pull your stitches tight to close up the end.

Now is the time to add features to your mouse. I sewed my mouse eyes with large knots made with embroidery floss (more directions on my blog). You could also use beads or googly eyes.

Next, cut some little ears out of your two colors of felt. Glue the pink centers on top of your ears using fabric glue or white craft glue.

There are a few ways to make a tail. I made mine out of wire and felt. You can find the directions on my blog. .

Another option is to use matching pipe cleaner to form a tail. This will not have the same texture as your mouse head, but you can easily twist it into a curl.

Or you can cut a short, thin piece of felt from your mouse fabric to hang from the bottom of your spool. This will not have any curl to it, but will match the color and texture of your mouse head.

The fun part is decorating your spool. I painted the top and bottom rim of my spool with gold paint, but this is optional. Then I added a hanger before gluing some Christmas ribbon to the center part of my spool (you can also use yarn or ribbon for the center covering). I left some of my ribbon hanging off so that it looked like a spool in use.

Then I attached my mouse head and tail to my spool using hot glue.

I finished off this cute ornament with a little twine ribbon. I hope my friend likes this special ornament!
