What would Halloween be without witches? I'm not talking cute or silly ones, or even gory and horror movie types...I mean the kind of witch you might find in a Grimm's fairytale. Enchanting but dark. To me, the hat makes the witch!!! Here's my version of a hat for the serious witch enthusiast.

To begin, I purchased a good quality, basic costume hat online. It was not expensive, but had a large brim and was sturdy.

I removed the stiff netting that was attached to the back of the cone. Just like in baking, the quality of your fabric and flowers will affect the outcome of your hat. That said, it doesn't mean you can't find great additions to your hat at the dollar store! The key is to choose flowers and trims that feel and look great within your own budget.

Next, I hot-glue this wide black lace ruffle to the base of the cone, being careful not to stretch the elastic as I moved it around. It took approx 1/2 yard.

I took a package of black, loosely-woven fabric (found at Michael's in the Halloween section) and cut out enough to drape it over the cone.

Basically, I hand stitched a cone to slip over the hat, making sure it was a bit larger so you could see gathers in it when on the hat. No permanent attachment is needed.

I added about a yard of fine-mesh black netting around the cone. It was loosely gathered and hand stitched in the back. I left enough of a tail to be fluffed up for a dramatic effect.

This was my assortment of flowers and my crow. I wanted a touch of color so I choose a very deep crimson selection of silks to go with the black accents.

Before adding the accents, I made a long train for the back of the hat with another yard of netting. It was hot glued underneath the netting poof.

The flowers in front were set first. All others will be balanced from these.

Flowers for the back were then glued on.

A few accents for the sides...

...and she's ready to fly!

A serious hat! I think the use of black netting really gave it an eerie look. What witch wouldn't want this hat?

What a great upgrade. That is a serious hat any witch would envy. Looks like it came out of a fairy tale. Great share and great job.
