If it's really bad I spray down with oven cleaner outside, let it work, then hose off, run thru dishwasher. Once cleaned I run thru dishwasher once a month.

A degreaser would work really well, also!
Spray with a degreaser, let sit, then soak in hot water.
Some people put in the dishwasher but I've been told it can cause damage to the internal part of the filter.
You can spray it, but frankly, I just put mine in my dishwasher and run it on "pot scrubber" setting. It comes out fine!
I use hot soapy water with blue dawn dishsoap and a splastic of white vinegar.
Let it soak and rinse off.
