Hey guys,We are facing a little electrical problem due to storm and was wondering how many of you use a power surge protector in Toronto. By installing a power surge protector, electronic equipment can be protected from most power surges and spike. Last day, our television was not working after the lightning strike. Since this is happening frequently, my friends recommended me to install a power surge protector. So, I'm moving forward to install it.What are the power surge protector strategies for beginners?

  • Are you talking about a whole house surge protector? If so, I would defer to the pros. Will cost more, but if you "Harry Homeowner" it and something goes amiss, your home insurance carrier will deny the claim because it was not installed by a licensed professional. Shadow the electrician, but don't slow him or her down. Many are forthcoming and will be happy to explain things. Do you need to know how to hire a contractor?

I have a couple of power strips that have surge protectors built into them. But if you're planning to install something to protect your whole house, here's a tutorial on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFNoqs4BK7M

It sounds like I have what Beth is talking about. I have a power strip surge protector on my TV and one on my computer. The ones I have, have about four outlets on them. You plug it into your wall socket and then plug your computer or TV or whatever in one of the outlets and it should be protected. If you are wanting a whole house protector then speak with a professional.

  • I would absolutely not mess with a whole house surge protector or any major electrical work, you could really screw it up so that's best left to a pro. Have you tried the plug in surge protectors from the store?
