Farmhouse Tray With a Union Jack
I love the Union Jack. I actually love all things England and UK, but there is something about the design of their flag that draws my eyes to it and makes me smile.
I had this wood tray I built during a woodwork workshop I attended some time ago and I realized it would the perfect size project to paint my first Union Jack.

This is how my tray looked unfinished.
I started by cutting out a piece of cardboard in the exact same size of the bottom of my tray. Then using this reference picture from the internet, I sketched the flag on the cardboard. There is no need to follow the measurements with perfect accuracy. The picture was just a guideline.
I put some painters tape on the stripes that were supposed to remain white, and this is how my "prototype flag" looked like.
After some light sanding and cleaning, I applied two coats of an off-white paint to the entire tray. This color is "Angelic" by Paint Couture.
Once the paint was dry, I transferred the tapes from the cardboard to the bottom of my tray, replicating the design.
Next I painted all triangles in gray. I used "British Gray" by Paint Couture.
I mixed equal parts of the white and gray paint, and brushed that light gray on all the stripes that were not covered by tape.
I removed the tapes to reveal the white stripes, then with a small brush, I did all the necessary touch-ups in each color.
With a chip brush, I applied a coat of clear wax to protect the paint and also to create a solid barrier between the paint and the glaze I was about to apply because I didn't want the glaze to darken the colors too much.
Finally I applied the glaze with a chip brush, and removed the excess with a rag.
