How can I keep squirrels out of my flower pots?

I plant flowers in my flower pots and within a few days the squirrels have dug up the plants, some completely out of the pot on the ground and potting soil is everywhere. Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Place rocks on top of the soil. Something that is big enough that it is too much effort for them to move. Any home improvement center, hardware store, nursery or landscape supply will have a variety to choose from. That's what I use here in CA and so do my friends in other areas of the country.

    Hi Pattie,

These creatures are a big pain! What I did was put broken ceramic pieces, larger flat stones, brick pieces, anything that they could not dig up on top of the soil. This served 2 purposes (actually 3)...they could not dig in and ruin ( discouraged), slowed evaporation , and blocked some weeds. Best to you.

Place a pot or two near a 115v outlet take a old cord split it in half and then peal back 2/3 inches of the copper run that through the bottom and come out kust above the area you are expecting to planet with soil be sure the copper ends are sepperated place plant and plug in the cord.

    Sit back and enjoy...
