How do I treat hardwood floors before installing new hardwood?

Don't the installers need to pull up the carpet and treat the slab before putting down the hardwood floor? They are telling me I have to do this if I want it done. What should THEY be using?

I would take a look at the contract. It should be clear who is responsible for the prep work.
Hi Mineddi, it sounds as if your "installers" are truly only installers. You can likely find a day laborer or handyman to do the ground work for (may be done on an hourly basis) the new hardwood install. Or you could do it yourself and save some $. Ultimately, you are the person to decide. I believe there are companies out there who would contract with you to do the tear out, floor treatment if needed, and a new hardwood floor install.
I've already paid for flooring and install thru Home Depot.
Too old to do this myself.
Would it be possible for them to tear the carpet out one day and come back in a few days to install the new floor? If so, hire a kid from the neighborhood to paint the subfloor with an enamel paint. That will take care of the odor.
Good idea. I hate to pay more to have a kid come and paint. I am going to sit on HD and make them do what needs to be done.
