Building Shelves for a Small Nursery Closet

We are expecting our first child in a few short months which means we are prepping a nursery! One of the first things I wanted to do was create a decent closet space. The room is long but narrow, with only one window and the original closet was bumped up right next to the window frame. This made the room feel darker and smaller. I wanted to open the space up but still keep a small closet for storage. We had a professional help us with this process because there were outlets in the wall and I don't mess with electricity! Once the closet resized, I needed to figure out the best way to accommodate shelves and a space to hang clothes.

This is where we started. The original closet was wide but it took up too much space in this long but narrow room. So we shrunk it. Of course, now we had to make the most out of this small closet.

After resizing, the closet was a mess of old paint, plaster, and drywall. I used two coats of white paint to give a clean and smooth look.

I have a lot of spare wood from past projects, so I knew I didn't have to buy a special shelf or closet organization system. I just had to find a couple pieces of wood that fit the space.

I had to cut the wood to size and then I sanded each piece.

I gave each piece of wood a coat of gray primer. Then I used a peach spray paint to give it a little color. (I got the spray paint at a local store's 'going-out-of-business' sale, so it was only $1.50!)

I picked up a 48 inch wooden dowel and cut it in half. These will be the bars used to hang clothes.

I gave each dowel a coat of Red Mahogany stain.

I bought four of these shelf & rod closet brackets to create two levels of shelves and hanging rods.

Now we have a small but effective closet space! I still have to work on the outside of the closet/rest of the nursery, but I'm so happy to have a useful closet.
