How can I keep squirrels away from my pumpkins?

I put quite a few sugar pumpkins out for my Fall decorations and the squirrels chewed thru all of them! I applied petroleum jelly on some and hairspray on others and even sprayed 3 coats of clear varnish on a few and they still ate them! Any other suggestions? I even saw a squirrel run away with one from my porch! Help!

    Hello Chriss,

Sorry to hear your efforts have been so warmly appreciated by the local squirrels. Maybe next year - Artificial ones might be the answer.

Maybe it was the unlucky number 13 that made them decide to eat my pumpkins! I’m down to two now!

drop some drops of peppermint oil at the top & let it run down the side all around the pumpkin & then immediately sprinkle the wet oil markings with hot cayenne pepper, it looks decorative & keeps all away! It naturals & cant do any harm & due to odor no animal or bug will go anywhere near it, so you don’t have to worry about any if your own pets either getting harmed. You might have to repeat it before your done with them but works great!!

    Hi Connie,

Thank you for the info but unfortunately all 13 pumpkins have been chewed to pieces! I did use peppermint oil as well. The house on the next street has pumpkins displayed and they’re fine. Maybe they’re plastic?!! I wonder if the type of pumpkin (mine were sugar) has anything to do with it? I now have a cement pumpkin on the porch-this will last forever but it weighs a ton! 🎃
