I don't know if they'll rot. We use then in our basement and cellars to keep out crickets. I think they are cool.
crickets and mice dont like the hedge apples
I spray painted some gold once for Christmas. They did eventually rot, but that was about the time I was finished with them.
We used to place them in cabinets to keep out roaches and crickets. Good luck.
There are many crafts you can use Osage Orange for. You can hollow out the centers the size of a tea light candle, add the candle and do the same with other fall themed fruits/vegetables, add a few fall themed silk flowers around them and you have a beautiful table or mantle centerpiece. If you have a good sized pumpkin the Osage Orange can become your jack-o-lantern eyes. You can spray paint them or not, attach ribbon and hang them as fall/christmas decorations. And of course there's always the option of adding them to a wreath or spray for fall. Just check the internet (google) for craft ideas using Osage Orange.
I have sliced them laterally, dried, & usd them for flower heads w/ birdseed glued in middle. They make a wavy blossom head.
I used to make half inch slices and lay the slices on an old screen, from a window. Left them to dry out in the sun. After they are dried, there are so many things to do. Let their dried shapes be your guide. I made mobiles with bird seeds stuck to them. Paint them, and on and on!
