Once it starts yellowing, after the cool weather has had its way with it. But I like saving the “feathers” to make “ witches” brooms at Halloween, mix with corn stalks to make “shieves” at Thanksgiving, and frost hem white with artificial snow at Christmas.

Hi Sandra, The best time to cut back pampas grass is in late winter just before the plant begins sending up new foliage. Waiting until the end of winter allows you to enjoy the plumes all year. Every once in a while, clumps of pampas grass form smaller clumps off to the side.

It’s wonderful to see in the garden over winter - and it’s great for birds! Wait until spring to cut it back. :)

Depending on your planting zone in the springtime before the new growth starts. Some garden sources even recommend burning it.
