How do I keep 'suckers' from growing out of the base of a tree?

I had my tree trimmed and there are 'suckers' growing out of the base. I keep weed waking them down, but they come back. Is there anything I can use to prevent them from popping up??

Hi Cary Ann, I share your problem and about the only way to stop the growth is to cover the base area of the tree with some type of barrier so they don't get sun. Here's more info for you to consider.

I don't think anything will keep suckers from coming up around a live stump. I keep my grape vines from growing back by just pulling off the suckers whenever they appear.
As soon as you see them, cut them off, it is a natural process for trees to do this when trimmed, they are just forming new to replace the trimmed off branches. Same as when you pinch off a plant on the top, they grow sideways.
I hope it isn't an Ash tree.

I agree with the others. Suckers are a natural part of the plant and the only thing you can do is try to completely cover them so they don't get any sun (very, very hard to execute) or you cut them off as they grow. Don't spray them with anything to try to kill them. The chemical will work it's way into the tree and it could kill it. Wishing you the best.
