It's just about impossible. Stop their food source, plug up all areas they can get in. Put most food in storage plastic containers. Get a cat.
Get a cat. My daughter, her husband or 2 kids were never cat friendly. However after trying for years to keep mice away in their 1894 DC townhome, they relented after a casual suggestion from a friend. It's been now about 7 years. Beloved "Gumbo" now rules, my son in law has full conversations with him daily and none of them can now imagine life without him. No mice problem since.
We got a cat to get rid of mice on our porch. We have a pet door so the cat can come in or out. Now, the cat catches chipmunks and carries them inside and lets them go. Thanks kitty.
