It depends on the chair. The best way is to measure the seat, including all sides then add extra for stapling it underneath. Here's a short article that should help you figure out how much you need. Wishing you the best.

I do this all the time. For a standard dining chair it's usually about 1 1/2- 2 yards. However, I would measure your seat and ask at the fabric store for a second opinion, they always know exactly. Like Linda above said, you need enough to cover the seat and have enough to staple, but you also need to think about your pattern. If you're doing a solid color or a busy repeat you should be ok with straight yardage. If however, you are doing a pattern with a focal point that needs to be centered, that will change your requirements.
Entire chair or just seat? Can you share a photo? I have done this hundreds of times, easy enough to do, just need to know what type of chairs you wish to recover.
