When I redid mine, I stripped layers of old paint off, sanded and then used floor paint on the steps, stained the railing and ended up painting the risers and all other trim white. It was a worthwhile project!

I just did mine black threads and handrail back of steps white looks great
You could paint it or add new carpeting
