    Paint would work well.

bead board held on with Loctite power grip. Trim out with the plastic "wood" that is super light in the trim section of Home Depot. Textured wall paper would work well. Paint trim and seal. I had old metal ones I painted. Then I added a large strawberry in the middle of each since that was my kitchen theme back then. Add a stencil to each or leave plain color and add new pulls.

Always use oil base on metal, latex will rust

Old metal cabinets are highly regarded in certain genre vintage homes.

With that in mind, I would suggest that you evaluate the Era of your home and the value of keeping those old metal cabinets in pristine condition.

As in, I would strip them & paint them in oil-based enamel, knowing nothing else.
