The problem could be dry skin. An oatmeal shampoo might do the trick for you. You can buy your shampoo, or make your own. The recipe and instructions on how to use it in this article.

    Hi Cheryl,

It probably would be a good idea to take your dog to the vet to have it checked out, there are skin conditions that might be un-noticed by our eyes, the vets have been trained to recognize things we may not see, like a fungus or an allergy to something in the dog's environment. It may even be what your dog is being fed.

    Best to you.

  • Redcatcec is correct, get your dog to the vet asap. Chances are they have an undiagnosed skin condition.

When I rescued Bailey, my 12.5 year old Doberman terrier mix, she had horribly dry skin. Typically they try and change food and give them (fish oil) supplements. Bailey, we found out, was horribly allergic to fish oil and even some of the very expensive prescription food. So with my vet, by trial and error, we worked on what she could or could not eat, what supplements did or did not work and even what laundry detergent could be used. I turned my entire household upside down to accommodate her needs. I cook her food daily (along with the rest of the tribe), and we use the only detergent she can tolerate (Dreft and even most "free and clear" detergent didn't work), with vinegar in the rinse, no fabric softeners or chemical additives and felted wool dryer balls for the dryer. Since I later acquired a hand me down bird, it now works well for all of us.

Hopefully your case will not be as extreme, but your poor dog will lead a miserable existence unless professionally diagnosed. What they consume as well as what they sleep on can be an issue. In winter I use cotton flannel and in summer I use 100% cotton sheets.

Hope you and your vet can come up with a solution in the short term. Good luck and keep us posted! 🐶
