Mix 1 part water with 2 parts latex paint, mix well then paint. That's all it takes. :) Wishing you the best.
When I did my kitchen table, I used a premade paint, but watered down latex paint also works. I stripped the finish off my oak table first. Click on my name or the picture next to my name in this reply to look at my projects.
Since its already painted and you want it to look whitewashed. You need to decide if you want brown or gray to show thru. Repaint it the underfloor you choose. Let dry for at least 1 week if use latex or 2 days if use oil. (It actually takes 30 days for latex to cure so your taking a chance even at a week of washing it off) Apply your whitewash which is thinned down white paint. Latex thin with water, oil based thin with paint thinner. Brush on , while off to the desired coverage. Have fun. If you use oil, no top coat needed. If use latex, you'll have to apply an aquathane.
