You can remove the doors, fill in the holes left by hinge removal or frame the opening.

Many fabric stores, and some Walmarts, carry plastic lace fabric which makes beautiful shelf coverings with a scallop of the lace hanging out over the edge of the shelves. It's easy to cut with regular scissors.
I bought mini barn door hardware, made for cabinet door thickness panels.
I used vinyl “foil” finished 12” wide shelves, hung vertically, like sliding door panels.

Also, 2x2’s screwed into the ceiling joists are perfect for hanging the barn door hardware. Paint to match.
