How do I paint wood to make it look worn!

Question

Hubby came home for R&R for one month from Afghanistan. Grandson who is 2 1/2 informed him that he is now a big Pirate and all Pirates need a ship. So needles to say hubby looking for a project,  wheels started turning. Now we have a huge ship/fort/swing set in our back yard that needs to look authentic . This is where grandma comes in:) How and what do I use to paint this ship to not only make it look worn but preserve its beauty? Any suggestions welcomed!
