How can we convert this fireplace into something else?

first off our dining room is very small so the fireplace is too big for it. We are looking for ideas to take it out and put maybe a buffet or??? there but whatever we decide to put there in its place, we want it to come out as far as the fireplace did for minimal floor repair etc.I would appreciate any ideas .

If you want more space, putting something there that extends as far as the hearth currently does may not help you much. I know that may not be as helpful as you're looking for, but just something to consider.

Do you know what the flooring is under the hearth? Would a rug be acceptable?

Try going into the wall space for a built in look for a hutch or coffee nook.

Dining room a buffet would work. A console table would also be good.

For a temporary fix, what about open shelves in the fireplace opening ?

My approach would be to opt for a smaller table and less decoration on the fireplace and elsewhere to match the proportion of the room and simplify the look. It would preserve the value of the fireplace, which adds to the monetary value of a house and make it more salable when/if the time comes to move. The fireplace isn't ugly, to my mind. It has more character than most.

If you take out the fireplace, you are going to have to match the flooring when you take the hearth out.

Does this fireplace have a chimney? If so this is going to be a difficult task and I would leave that up to a contractor. Other than that, can you get a smaller table? It would give you more space.

Remove entire fireplace add a smaller sized buffet ... A smaller table, maybe a round one I think would look nice...
