If the door has holes, it is probably a hollow core door. Treating it like drywall will work. Use drywall tape and compound. It won't look perfect, however. Hollow core door blanks are readily available, even from garage sales. You could just replace the door.

A photo would be helpful. What kind of door, what kind of hole. A simple patch can be glued or tacked on if you don't care what it looks like.
